Bellman and Black: a moody read

Bellman & Black: A Ghost StoryBellman & Black: A Ghost Story by Diane Setterfield

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Thought I needed something dark and unsettling for October, and I did! It was quite a good read, this strange gloomy book which seemed to meander but which in reality came full circle to make perfect, awful sense in the end. But it was so long. Truly was January before I finished! I might be interested in reading other works by the same author, since many seemed to like earlier books better. I can’t compare it to Poe in terms of the quality of the writing, but the sense of dread that is built for the reader was evident, and evoked a similar mood for me.

I don’t read many adult books these days, and I’m not typically a horror reader, so this one was a departure for me. I really enjoyed it.
