NaNo Day 18 Inspiration: A Photo of Kate

Here is a picture of Kate in college, I believe. Look at the beautiful stonework behind her, the sun shining on the wall. Even better, take a look at Kate. She looks so happy in this picture. She looks self-possessed and confident. She looks like a woman with a mind of her own. That’s the heart of this story, and that heart gets stronger each time I write. What a wonderful feeling.
I love the contrast between the roughly textured, shaped bricks and her dress, draping and gathered and soft, and my internal image of her, strong and capable. I like to imagine that she’s standing outside the hall of her favorite class.
Today, it’s particularly important to me because I just spent the weekend with some other inspiring college students. Tomorrow, a post about my fantastic weekend with some of the students of CKI, the college branch of Kiwanis.
